II. Multi-dimensional Satisfaction Space
| | These scales are the same ones we were just looking at, only re-oriented in order to view the problem in multi-dimensional satisfaction space. Now we can see that it is no longer true that one sister has to lose when the other gains. | Smartsettle Objectives ----- Fairness & Efficiency
Before we look for a solution, let's decide how we’re going to measure a good agreement. SmartSettle assumes that the two main objectives defining a good solution are fairness and efficiency. Fairness has to do with how the benefits should be divided among all the parties. Efficiency has to do with the total quantity of benefits, i.e. making sure that no value is left on the table. | Achieving Fairness
Getting back to the Orange Quarrel:
Clever neutral told us how to mend:
"Lucy cut, Loni choose"
But it sparked debate that would not end:
"Win-win or Lose-Lose? " | | All things being equal, this seemed like a pretty fair solution. Each sister got 50% what they wanted. This achieves our fairness objective, and arguably even a win-win solution, but can we do better? | |
